'Avatar 2' release date: sequel postponed indefinitely

 20th Century Fox

"Avatar 2," the sequel to the 2009 film that tells the story of Pandora and its extraordinary inhabitants, suffers another major, indefinite delay. The film's release has once again been postponed. It was first schedule to premiere in Dec. 2017.

The first movie of the planned trilogy directed by James Cameron will not be out on Christmas next year as planned, according to The Wrap. There are no details about the film's new release date.

Disney changed the release date of the next "Star Wars" chapter to the same date as "Avatar 2's" initial scheduled release just days ago, prompting movie buffs to got excited about the idea that Cameron's movie will spar against "Star Wars Episode 8."

The upcoming film's predecessor, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," almost beat out "Avatar" as the top grossing film of all time. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" currently sits at the third spot with $1.9 billion in earnings. "Titanic" takes the second spot.

There are speculations that the postponement of "Avatar 2" was brought into play to prevent this exciting blockbuster duel from happening since it might hurt both anticipated movies' ticket performance.

It is reportedly very unlikely that Disney will be the one to give way and adjust, especially since "Star Wars" is the film involved.

Reports say that it may also be due to Cameron's ambition to finish filming the entire trilogy first before releasing "Avatar 2." The filmmaker has already said that he will be simultaneously developing and shooting all three films although filming has reportedly yet to begin.

It also won't be a surprise to learn that Cameron wants to buy more time to perfect the film, considering his tendency to be a perfectionist.
