The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) introduced Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in "Justice League," also giving a glimpse of Atlantis and how the undersea people communicate with one another.
During the Atlantis scene, Mera (Amber Heard) constructed an air bubble to talk to Arthur. While it somehow worked for the brief dialogue, some fans think it would not be practical for the duration of Momoa's upcoming film, which will mostly take place in Atlantis. However, this will not be the case in "Aquaman," according to director James Wan.
Wan took to Twitter on Wednesday to respond to a lighthearted jab at a Hollywood Reporter opinion piece, which ended with a quip about how "Justice League" handled communication in Atlantis. Although he did not address the criticism, he made it clear that their approach to underwater conversations will be different.
"Fret not, no 'air bubbles for dialogue' in my underwater world," Wan said.
The air bubble was a great way to showcase Mera's aquatic powers. However, many criticized the said scene for being illogical and cheating underwater talking. After all, Atlanteans are people who can breathe underwater. There should be a more distinct way for them to communicate.
Wan did not specify how they will handle those dialogues. Screen Rant, however, predicts they might use some sort of communication device or telepathy.
Wan has been known as one of the most ambitious and creative filmmakers in Hollywood right now, having helmed films like "Furious 7," "The Conjuring," and "Insidious." Regardless of his underwater dialogue technique, fans can expect that the director will handle it in a unique and believable way.
"Aquaman" will mark Arthur Curry's first solo outing on the big screen. It has been described as "Star Wars underwater," with Wan promising a "swashbuckling action-adventure, sort of high seas adventure story."
Starring Momoa in the lead role, Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and more, the film is slated to open in cinemas on Dec. 21, 2018.
