'Aquaman' news: 'Justice League' Atlantis scene released online

To warm up for next year's "Aquaman," fans may now re-watch the Atlantis scene from "Justice League" online.

Set before the Justice League unites in Gotham City, the sequence sees Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) aka Aquaman heading off to his underworld homeland. Upon arrival, he sees Mera (Amber Heard) leading a crew of guards tasked to defend one of the Mother Boxes when they are attacked by Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) who aims to obtain three of those cubes hidden on Earth. Aquaman spars with the invader briefly but is knocked out long enough for Steppenwolf to take the box.

The two-minute footage is the sole tease for Mera and Atlantis which will play significant parts in Aquaman's standalone film next year. Momoa previously said "Aquaman" will be a full origin story, filling in some of Arthur Curry's backstory that comes before his introduction in the DC Extended Universe in "Batman vs Superman" and debut in "Justice League." At the same time, it is also an epic battle and a big road film.

"In the story, we're going to see a couple different younger versions of me," he told Comic Book, adding, "And even before I was born, so you'll know where my mother came from, Atlantis. We've got to establish seven different kingdoms and the threat."

"The Conjuring" star Patrick Wilson will serve as the primary villain of the film, portraying Aquaman's jealous younger stepbrother Orm/Ocean Master who has his eyes on the throne of Atlantis.

Other cast members include Willem Dafoe as Atlantis' chief scientific adviser, Nuidis Vulko; Temuera Morrison as Arthur's father, Tomas Curry; Nicole Kidman as Arthur's Atlantean mother Atlanna; Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus of Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta; and Ludi Lin as Murk, the leader of Atlantis' frontline army.

Directed by James Wan, the film will open in cinemas on Dec. 21, 2018.
