Apple Watch update: WatchOS 2 release details

Aside from the public release of iOS 9 this week, Apple Inc. is also unveiling WatchOS 2 for the tech firm's first wearable device, the Apple Watch. But what's new in the operating system?

Several sources claim that the new WatchOS 2 features a more fluid operating system that will make the function of the Apple Watch more user-friendly. It also reportedly allows users to simultaneously check the time and run or launch different apps and notifications.

Other notable features that will be introduced with the release of the new WatchOS 2 include:

User-generated clock aces and local apps
This means that the WatchOS 2 can allow app developers to come up with new apps for the wearable device without having to connect their smartwatch to an iPhone. Because of this, all apps can now function independently on the Apple Watch. It will also allow developers to customize the new watch faces with ease.

Time Travel feature
This allows a user's Apple Watch to look back at any saved information on the device at any time of the day. This will help make backtracking messages or other information easier.

Nightstand Mode
The new WatchOS 2 can automatically convert the wearable device into a working alarm clock even if it is not worn around the wrist. Users only have to connect their Apple Watches to the charger and it will instantly have a luminescent digital display that is normally seen in typical alarm clocks. To turn off the alarm, users just have to press the device's built-in crown.

Other added features include data gathering and presentation, as well initiating network connection from servers that are located at a distance.

Apple Watch owners can expect to see the release of WatchOS 2 at the same time as the iOS 9 on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
