'American Horror Story' season 5 plot and spoiler updates: What does 'Operation Top Hat' have to do with the next season?

Avid "American Horror Story" fans are already looking for news about the next season of the hit horror anthology series just a few weeks after the finale of "Freak Show" was aired.

Since the fifth season was ordered by FX Network last October, loyal viewers of the show have been speculating on the next plot of the series. For instance, a recent report posted by the Inquistr claims that "Freak Show's" finale episode provided a clue on the storyline for the upcoming season. The subtle hint may have been shown when Massimo (Danny Huston) declined Elsa's (Jessica Lange) proposal to run away with her to Rome because he was stricken with a very grave bone and lung disease that could kill him in a month's time. It could mean that Massimo got sick because of the radioactive bombs that were dropped at the Nevada Test Site.

That clue could be pointing to the possibility of incorporating the legendary "Operation Top Hat," which is known as the government's highly classified project where chemical warfare explosives were tested in the '50s.

FX Network's CEO John Landgraf also mentioned that the next installment of "American Horror Story" will be set in the present time, which could mean that the show would feature how the chemical warfare victims exposed to the hazards of the testing sites are coping with their situations.

Landgraf also said during the 2015 winter press tour of the Television Critics Association that the upcoming season of "American Horror Story" will be very different from "Freak Show."

"I think there's going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to, say, between Book 3 ['Coven'] and 4 ['Freak Show']," the network executive said.

However, only few details about "American Horror Story" season 5 have been revealed so far, except for the willingness of "Freak Show" stars like Angela Bassett, Michael Chiklis, Lily Rabe, and Kathy Bates to return next season. Still, Lange's return is highly anticipated by the fans of the TV show.
