After announcing that Jason O' Mara will portray the role of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new director, ABC finally released the official synopsis for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season 4.

The synopsis reveals that the fourth season of the superhero sci-fi series will continue right after the events that happened at the end of season 3, where the team managed to eradicate Hydra and defeat the powerful Inhuman named Hive who lived in the body of Grant Ward (Brett Dalton). But despite their success, the team lost one of their own when Lincoln Campbell (Luke Mitchell) sacrificed himself to save the team from Hive's evil plans.

Phil Coulson's (Clark Gregg) position as S.H.I.E.L.D director was also compromised despite the agency's success at the end of the third season because he was presumed dead. This prompted the agency to look for a new director, while Coulson was demoted back to being a regular agent and team up with Mack (Henry Simmons) to face new adventures in the upcoming season.

The synopsis also mentions what will happen to the other members of the S.H.I.E.L.D. It reads:

"They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons' new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she's now the Director's confidant."

The synopsis also mentions how the Ghost Rider/Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna) will fit into the new season of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" season 4. But it does not confirm if the new character will be an ally or an enemy of the agency.

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" season 4 premieres on Sept. 20, on ABC.
