It is official: Netflix has renewed "13 Reasons Why" for a second season.

According to Deadline, Netflix's gripping adaption of Jay Asher's bestselling 2007 young adult book has been renewed for a 13-episode second season. Scheduled to air in 2018, season 2 will explore the aftermath of Hannah Baker's (Katherine Langford) unexpected death. It will follow the other characters' tumultuous journeys as they head toward emotional healing and recovery.

The show's official Twitter account has released the first trailer for season 2 along with the renewal announcement. "Their story isn't over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming," reads the caption.

Further details about the upcoming season have yet to be revealed. One of the biggest burning questions from season 1 is whether Langford will return. Since the freshman installment centered on Hannah and the 13 reasons why she committed suicide, fans are still wondering if she will still come back even in a guest starring capacity.

The series tells Hannah's story by weaving in flashbacks told in the present. Showrunner Brian Yorkey recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and he mentioned that the show's structure would indicate that Langford will certainly return. "Hannah's story is still very much not finished," he teased. "She's an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she's very much still at the center of it."

The 13-episode first season of the program caused quite a stir among viewers because of how it portrays the subject of suicide. Some considered the final episode as too graphic for TV when it showed the lead character Hannah kill herself. In addition, many believed that the program is glamorizing the idea of suicide.

Yorkey and executive producer Selena Gomez addressed the backlash, with the former arguing that the show actually intends to portray suicide as "ugly" and "damaging."

"It's going to come no matter what. It's not an easy subject to talk about. But I'm very fortunate with how it's doing," Gomez added.

Netflix has yet to announce a definitive release date for "13 Reasons Why" season 2.
