Xbox One S release date, specs: Console will ramp up 1080p games to 4K

Despite its sleeker and thinner build, the Xbox One S will pack much more power than its bulky older brother when it is released later this year.

The latest titbit about the highly anticipated console is that it will feature the capability to bump up the resolution of 1080p games to 4K resolution.

Windows and Xbox Gaming Platform director Mike Ybarra revealed the good news via his Twitter account when asked by a fan regarding the said 4K boost support.

AMD's spanking new upscaling technology will make that possible, and as a bonus, will even enhance the power efficiency of the Xbox One S.

The slim Xbox One upgrade will make use of AMD's new console-centric System-on-a-chip or SoC, which is expected to be the same tech to be used on its rival, the PlayStation Neo.

With 4K upscale native to the Xbox One S, gamers won't need a separate software or equipment to make their games as pristine as they can be.

That being said, users with a 4K monitor or television will definitely be able to make the most out of the Xbox One S.

While the console can handle such level of graphics quality, the 4K resolution on the Xbox One S won't be as stunning as the one on the more powerful Xbox One Scorpio, but it will still look amazing anyway.

As for the differences with the slim console with its big brother the Xbox One, it is expected to boast smoother in-game frame rates in addition to the improved graphics.

The Xbox One S will also feature 4K Ultra High-Definition video playback as well as HDR support. It comes with the entry-level 500GB model at $299, 1TB at $349 and 2TB at $399.

The Xbox One S will see the light of day next month. A specific date hasn't been announced yet.
