'The X-Files' revival news: Series creator explains big split between Mulder, Scully

The dreams of avid "The X-Files" fans will finally come true after FOX announced that the iconic sci-fi drama will return, but with an unexpected twist. Based on the previous spoilers for "The X-Files" revival, the fan-favorite TV couple Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) have already called it quits.

The couple was last seen in the 2008 full-length movie "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," where they finally decided to be engaged after several years of being in a complicated relationship on TV. This makes it hard for the show's loyal fans to accept that they are no longer an item when they return to the small screen early next year.

But according to series creator Chris Carter, the Mulder-Scully breakup is necessary to add more depth to the plot of the upcoming revival miniseries.

"We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie," Carter told The Hollywood Reporter

Ever since the news about the breakup was revealed during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, fans of the show expressed their mixed emotions regarding the split of their favorite couple. And those who are hoping to see a rekindled romance during the six-episode miniseries might be in for another heartbreak as Duchovny told the audience present at the Wizard World Comic Con in Pittsburgh last weekend that he didn't know where Mulder and Scully's relationship is going.

"In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged," Duchovny shared. "I don't know where it's going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode..."

Can fans still hope to see a happy ending for "The X-Files" couple in the conclusion of the revival?

The "X-Files Revival" is slated to premiere on Jan. 24, 2016 on Fox.
