WWE SummerSlam 2016 rumors: Rumored John Cena vs Roman Reigns battle scrapped after Raw and Smackdown separation?

Is John Cena still getting a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight belt now that Raw and SmackDown are officially two different camps? WWE

Rumor has it that the recent split of WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown will hold off the purported WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and John Cena on SummerSlam.

While the Cena vs. Reigns at SummerSlam isn't official yet, there are already WWE 2016 rumors suggesting that this battle will now take place at a different place and time—in this case, Wrestlemania 33.

According to speculations, WWE does not want Cena to get involved with the ongoing AJ Styles-Reigns feud yet because they have big plans for him—a WWE World Heavyweight Championship fight against the latter.

Daily Wrestling News claims that the expected SummerSlam main event will instead be saved for the Wrestlemania 33 scheduled April next year and that WWE will be building up to that feud in the coming months.

WWE is reportedly cooking up a storyline that will clash Cena and Reigns ahead of next year's wrestling pay-per-view event to give them a reason to tussle for the coveted belt in Wrestlemania 33.

To put this plan in motion, WWE will purportedly arrange Cena's comeback battle (after being inactive for five months due to a shoulder injury) to intentionally steer him away from Reigns' line of sight and vice versa.

Instead, Cena is expected to fight a match against Rusev for the WWE United States Championship title. He is projected to win that bout, giving him a much-needed boost to take on Reigns.

It was first expected that SummerSlam will be the venue for the yet-to-be-introduced Cena-Reigns feud (anticipated to culminate into a full-on throwdown in a major WWE event) but the WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown break-up seems to have scrapped that altogether.

Starting this July, WWE SmackDown will be broadcasted live. The show will have a separate set of wrestlers as well as feuds and storylines involving only these fighters.

Whether or not a SummerSlam fight or a Wrestlemania 33 event will take place involving Cena and Reigns, fans will simply have to wait and see.
