Welsh Church leaders urge Chancellor to keep aid promises

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, and other Welsh Church leaders have called upon the Chancellor to allocate 0.7% of the UK's national income to overseas aid.

In a letter to George Osborne, the Church leaders said the Budget provided an "unprecedented opportunity to tackle hunger and make a real and lasting positive change to the lives of the poorest people in the world".

The Church leaders are lending their support to the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign to end global hunger.

The campaign highlights that although there is enough food in the world, 250 children are dying every hour because of malnutrition and one in eight people will go to bed hungry tonight.

"Hunger is the greatest scandal of our age," the Church leaders said.

They continued: "As church leaders in Wales we believe that we have a moral obligation to help the poor in our global community and play our part in relieving the injustice of hunger. We are therefore proud to support this campaign.

"There will only ever be enough food for everyone if we all take action to encourage our world leaders to make the right decisions on key issues, like stopping land grabbing, cracking down on tax dodging and keeping their promises on aid and climate finance."

Other signatories included the Bishop of Swansea, the Right Reverend John Davies, the Reverend Peter M Thomas, General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Wales, the Reverend Meirion Morris, General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, the Reverend Simon Walkling, Moderator of the United Reformed Church in Wales, and Elfed Godding, national director of the Evangelical Alliance Wales.
