After humanity was forced to stand still at the finale of "Wayward Pines" season 2, fans are now waiting for an announcement for the show's renewal.

Towards the end of the second season, Theo (Jason Patric) was considered the new leader of the strange town after Jason (Tom Stevens) died due to gunshot wounds. He initially decided to push through with the plans to put as many Wayward Pines residents back to sleep through the cryogenic pods in order to save humanity.

But instead of his initial plan to remain awake in Wayward Pines and inject the strains of typhoid, bubonic plague, and Marburg and expose himself to the abbies to spread all those diseases to the monsters in order to finally eradicate them, Kerry (Kacey Rohl) volunteered to do it instead. This could be her atonement after she found out that the ruthless leader, Jason, was the son that she put up for adoption.

After everything was settled and only the abbies remained in the world, viewers of the show found out that the new generation of mutants no longer look like monsters because they nos have close resemblance to humans. Could this mean that the sacrifices of the town residents to save humanity actually paid off?

While reports claim that the season finale of "Wayward Pines" season 2 earned the lowest ratings in the entire series, fans are still hoping to see a third season. Executive producer M. Night Shyamalan also agreed that the series needs at least three seasons with 10 episodes per season in order to tell a proper story.

"We thought it would be kind of cool to see if we had an ending, so we basically came up with an ending that we loved and then we said, 'Well, how many episodes would it take to get to that end?' In our mind, we broke it up to an additional two seasons. It's still an event series, but instead of 10 episodes, it's 30... We felt like there was still a lot to be said about what it's like to be on the last town on the planet," Shyamalan said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in May.

FOX has yet to reveal their renewal or cancellation plans for "Wayward Pines."
