'Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers, release date date: Nina Dobrev return rumored, marking new season as last?

Is Nina Dobrev returning in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8? Faecebook/thevampirediaries

There are still lingering rumors that Nina Dobrev will reprise her role in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. However, that is yet to be made official although, Dobrev has agreed to be part of the show's last season.

"It's what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it's what I've got in my head," Plec told TV Line on the possibility of Dobrev reprising her role in "The Vampire Diaries."

"Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to," she went on to say.

However, she believes that this is not set in stone and that Dobrev could change her mind. Fans will remember that she went to the set to record her voice for the season 7 finale, which might mean that she is still interested.

Of course, it also might mean that this stint is it for her in "The Vampire Diaries." Should everything fall in to place, Plec said that she is sticking with my side of the plan... to bring her back at the very end."

It is being rumored that Elena will be the face of the immortal named Sybil, who will debut in the new season. However, there's no information at hand to confirm this.

Meanwhile, If Dobrev will be in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8, it would likely mean that the show will also meet the finish line.

Bonnie's essayer Kat Graham is leaving after "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 as well as Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore and is one of the main characters.

It remains to be seen what the show will look like after that, but for now, fans can tune in to the San Diego Comic Con on July 23 where the cast and Plec among others will do a special video presentation and Q&A.

There are rumors floating around that Dobrev might make a surprise appearance, although it is deemed highly unlikely.
