'Vampire Diaries' season 6 spoilers: Damon and Elena share their 'honeymoon period' in new episodes

One fan-favorite Mystic Falls couple will have a trip down memory lane to relive their "honeymoon period" once "The Vampire Diaries" season 6 returns. Series executive producer Caroline Dries teased that several flashback scenes of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena's (Nina Dobrev) blossoming romance will be shown in episode 11 titled "Woke Up With A Monster."

In an interview with Alloy Magazine, Dries shared that Elena will try her best to deal with her feelings for Damon.

"When we first got them together at the end of Season 4 and they kissed in front of the fireplace, we then cut to three months later. They experienced a whole chunk of time together that we didn't see -- sort of the honeymoon period of a new boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. ... what we were excited about doing with their relationship and interested in playing around a bit with were those initial stages. ... basically all those things we didn't get to see the first time around -- but, all in all, it'll be fun to watch," Dries stated.

Could this mean that Elena will finally remember the love that she once shared with Damon, which she deliberately erased from her memory with the help of Alaric's (Matt Davis) compulsion, thinking that he is already dead?

Meanwhile, Somerhalder also teased that he will play a bigger role in the upcoming return of "The Vampire Diaries" after its winter hiatus. This time, he will not only act but direct the 16th episode of the season. In his Instagram account, the actor thanked those who are responsible for helping him during his first directorial gig by posting a picture of the script co-written by Dries and Brian Young. The said the episode will end the season.

But before that episode airs, fans will get to see the midseason premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" season 6, helmed by Somerhalder's co-actor Paul Wesley. Wesley portrays the role of Damon's younger brother Stefan.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 6 returns on Jan. 22.
