More shocking twists are coming to Mystic Falls in the next episode of "The Vampire Diaries."

In the episode titled "A Bird in a Gilded Cage," the Salvatore brothers find out that their mother Lily (Annie Wersching) is alive and well, but imprisoned in the year 1903. This is why Damon (Ian Somerhalder) tries to do everything that he can to save her and bring her to the present day. To do this, he seeks the help of Kai (Chris Wood) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) to rescue her.

But before doing so, Kai tells Damon the reason why Lily is trapped in 1903. According to him, Lily used to be a ripper and transformed to become a vampire back in 1858. She killed almost 3,000 people before faking her own death. Kai also mentions that the only way to stop Lily from doing more damage is with the help of a Gemini coven, and he warns Damon that trying to bring his mother to the present world is not a good idea.

Meanwhile, the other Salvatore brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) is left in present-day Mystic Falls to deal with Caroline's (Candice Accola) situation. Elena (Nina Dobrev) helps him bring their grieving vampire friend back to her senses.

But perhaps the most interesting plot twist in the coming episode is Bonnie and Damon's extra closeness with each other. Could this mean that Damon and Elena are over for good?

The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"With the help of Bonnie and Kai, Damon and Elena will set forth a plan to rescue Damon's mother, Lily, who is trapped in the 1903 prison world. Meanwhile, when Caroline's plan for Stefan backfires, she will be left to pick up the pieces. Elsewhere, back at Whitmore College, Enzo and Alaric's attempt to reel Caroline back in doesn't quite go as planned when they realize they're outmaneuvered. Lastly, an unexpected gift from Bonnie will leave Damon shaken to his core."

'The Vampire Diaries' season 6 episode 17 airs on Thursday, March 19.
