'Vampire Diaries' season 7 plot spoilers: New love for Damon after Elena's exit?

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be left broken after Elena (Nina Dobrev) leaves TVD. But could he find someone new? Facebook

A major change in Mystic Falls will happen by the end of "The Vampire Diaries" season 6, which is why fans are now curious to know what to look forward to when the supernatural TV series returns for season 7.

After lead actress Nina Dobrev announced that she will not return as Elena Gilbert in the fan-favorite show, loyal fans are wondering how Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley), and their friends Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) and Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) will move forward.

One of the rumored plots for "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 involves the possible romance between Damon and Bonnie. Now that Elena is out of the picture, Damon will be terribly broken hearted for losing the love of his life. But it does not mean that he cannot find a new love in the future.

Damon and Bonnie spent four months, just the two of them, when they were vanished at the end of season 5. With that connection, anything can happen with the pair next season.

Graham talked to Entertainment Weekly, and said that she is open to all possibilities about Bonnie's relationship with Damon.

She said, "I'm a fan of anything with Ian. I'm hoping that they can explore that really sort of layered relationship. I've always been a fan of for them. I've never not once shipped my character with an actor or actress on the show. I'm all about exploring characters' sexuality and stuff like that and I'm hoping that Bonnie, through her new empowerment, will start to discover another side of herself as well, maybe something that hasn't really been a focus on the show."

It can also be noted that Bonnie and Damon have a romantic relationship in L.J. Smith's book series with the same name on which the TV show is loosely based.

Meanwhile, series executive producer Julie Plec teased that season 7 will feature a little time jump following Elena's departure from Mystic Falls.
