'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 updates: Elena's return not impossible, says Ian Somerhalder

Is there a chance of seeing Elena Gilbert conscious and alive in the future installments of "The Vampire Diaries?"

Last season, Elena was cursed by Kai (Chris Wood) to be in deep slumber, to be awakened only when her friend Bonnie (Kat Graham) dies. The series wrote this plot after actress Nina Dobrev announced that she will not return to the supernatural drama for season 7.

But Dobrev's former cast mate and real-life ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder said that there is still a possibility that Elena would reappear in Mystic Falls in the future. In an interview posted on Melty, the recently married star said that bringing back his character Damon's greatest love is not impossible.

"The way it was done was great," the actor said. "The way it was done was actually incredible, because it allows people to know that she's still there... she's not dead. In seventy years or however long Bonnie lives, Elena will resurface at some point, although we'll be very old when that happens."

Mystic Falls will definitely be different without Elena's presence, but according to Somerhalder, there are a lot of things that fans can look forward for when the series begins this fall. He also said that the writers managed to go back to the first two seasons of the series, which he believes to be some of the most exciting periods of the show.

Fans are also speculating that Damon could find love despite Elena's departure, and they are hoping that he and Bonnie will have a chance together.

Three new characters are also expected to join the series, including two new female vampires who are secretly romantically involved with each other, as well as another female vampire who is masking her painful past with her dry humor.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is slated to begin on Oct. 8, but fans of the show can learn more information about the series during The CW's presentation at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 12.
