UFC 226 news: Cormier, Miocic call for much bigger purse ahead of superfight

It's a very rare thing for two opposing fighters to agree on something like the amount of money each of them will be earning after everything has been said and done, but Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Daniel "DC" Cormier and reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic were definitely on the same page in terms of their fight purse for the upcoming UFC 226 event on July 7.

Cormier and Miocic are set to face each other in a champion-versus-champion match. While both men already seem to have everything to gain in the fight (Winner becomes double champion and would unofficially be known as "the baddest man on the planet"), Cormier thinks that his usual rate of $500,000 per match is insufficient, especially for a fight of such magnitude and facing probably the hardest hitter in the entire UFC.

But instead of taking concerns to the management like every employee does, Cormier did something out of the ordinary instead: He called his opponent.

Combat sports website Flo Combat revealed that Cormier talked to Miocic over the phone to discuss the terms of their payment and surprisingly, Miocic immediately agreed.

"I did speak with him. I spoke with Stipe, I called Stipe," Cormier said. "Obviously, you know, great guy, I got to spend some time with him, fantastic champion, just a pillar of his community. I can't say enough good things about Stipe Miocic."

Even Miocic's Wife, who is aware that her husband feels that he is somewhat underpaid by the company, supported Cormier's proposal.

"With that being said, I told Stipe for $500,000, I'm not fighting Stipe Miocic. I threw out a big[ger] number and said for that number, I'm fighting Stipe Miocic. He goes, 'I fu*king love you.' That's what he said. I said for the right numbers we need to do this. His wife is in the back going, 'Yes, DC!'"

The UFC has yet to announce whether they would agree to both fighters' demands.
