Speculations linking Robert Downey Jr. to "True Detective" season 3 emerged after talks about his reported project with series creator Nic Pizzolatto on HBO circulated.

Sources told Variety that the "Iron Man" star and the creator of the "True Detective" crime drama anthology are talking about doing a drama project together. However, both HBO and the reps for Pizzollato and Downey Jr. has yet to comment about the validity of the said report.

Details about the said project are still being kept in the dark, yet sources reportedly claim that it will be taken from Downey Jr.'s planned reboot of the classic legal drama series "Perry Mason."

According to a report from Deadline, the rumored project will have short-run installments just like what Pizzollato did with "True Detective," where only eight episodes are made for each season. The report also mentioned that the TV project could be an ongoing series where the intervals between each seasons will be based on the actor's availability.

Downey Jr. and his wife Susan first pitched the project with Warner Bros. five years ago, and it became a passion project for the actor since then. He intended to portray the lead role that was portrayed by Raymond Burr in the TV series that ran from September 1957 to May 1966. He was also the one who came up with an original story with David Gambino based on the novels written by Erle Stanley Gardner.

If the project will push forward, this will mark Downey Jr.'s major return to TV after appearing in "Ally McBeal" from 2000 to 2002.

Pizzolatto, on the other hand, has an overall deal with HBO until 2018. Fans are still hoping to see a third season of "True Detective" despite its mediocre performance for its second season, but the network's new programming president Casey Bloys reportedly told reporters that the anthology "is not dead" as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter.
