The sophomore season of "True Detective" did not receive the same positive response that the dark drama anthology earned in season 1, but HBO is keeping their support for the show despite the reported backlash from the viewers.

According to reports, viewers of "True Detective" season 2 find the plot is overly confusing and tends to fall on the misogynistic side. The highly elaborate but unnecessary dialogues are also hurting the current season of the show.

However, HBO's programming president Michael Lombardo was quick to defend the show during the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour, saying that "True Detective" season 2, starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn, is worth watching until the very last episode.

"Much like all of our shows, I didn't believe this season or the last season was intended for as big an audience as we were getting. We're getting 12 million viewers an episode. I'm enormously proud of it," Lombardo said.

The HBO exec also has nothing but praises for series creator Nic Pizzolatto, saying that he should be considered as one of the most amazing writers on TV today. He also said that the network would still love to work with him for another season if he is still up for it.

"If he wanted to do another season, I've told him our door is always open. I'd love to do another season with him. I think he's a spectacular writer," Lombardo stated.

The network boss also said that the final two episodes should be watched to help viewers get the grasp of the actual story of the series as it will wrap up Pizzolatto's creation for the current season.

"I think it's enormously satisfying... I think Nic is a bold storyteller and I mean that only in the most positive ways. I think he takes risks in how he lays out stories and the pacing of stories and I think it pays off," Lombardo shared.

At the end of the penultimate episode of the season titled "Black Maps and Motel Rooms," Paul Woodrugh (Kitsch) was shot to death by Vinci PD Kevin Burris. The 90-minute eighth and final episode of "True Detective" season 2 titled "Omega Station" will air on Sunday, Aug. 9.
