'True Detective' season 2 finale spoilers: 90-minute air time for episode 8

 HBO

Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) died in the penultimate episode of "True Detective" season 2. Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) and Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) started working in the shadows when they both crossed the other side of the police line, having become fugitives for various crimes. With all the twists, HBO found the need to provide an extended time for the final episode of the season so the protagonists can solve the murder case that bound them together in the first place.

The cable network announced that the eighth and final episode of "True Detective" season 2 titled "Omega Station" will be 90 minutes long to tie the loose ends. HBO president Michael Lombardo said that viewers should look forward to the finale to learn why the characters and the plot were made the way they were.

"I think you need to watch the entirety of it," Lombardo said during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, as quoted by Cinema Blend. "I think it's enormously satisfying. I think [series creator Nic Pizzolatto] is a very – 'adventurous' is not the right word. He's a bold storyteller, and I mean that only in the most positive way. I think he takes risks in how he lays out a story, in the pacing of stories. And I think it pays off in this particular season."

Before Woodrugh's death in the penultimate episode, viewers found out about his own dirty little secret, which he had been keeping to himself for a very long time. Photos of his previous relationship with his former military colleague named Miguel surfaced, revealing his real sexual orientation. Miguel himself sent the photos to Woodrugh, and demanded to meet up with him to keep his secret.

When Woodrugh reached the meeting place, he discovered that some of his former colleagues are also working for the same people who instigated the corrupt practices in the city. But the men who were tasked to kill him got the surprise of their lives when he singlehandedly murdered all of them, including Miguel. But while Woodrugh thought that he was already safe, Lieutenant Kevin Burris (James Frain) came out of nowhere and shot him dead.

Since the only person who can move freely without having to worry about getting caught is already gone, it would be hard for Bezzerides and Velcoro to solve the case. Will they work with Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) to finally curb the operations of the corrupt city officials of Vinci, California?

The season 2 finale of "True Detective" airs on Sunday, Aug. 9.
