Oscar winning-actress Alicia Vikander was tapped to play the role of the femme fatale Lara Croft in the highly anticipated "Tomb Raider" reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The iconic character was played by Angelina Jones in the original "Tomb Raider," which gave her the boost to make her mark as a sought-after star and ultimately propelled her to stardom.

Taking into consideration Vikander landing the lead role in the "Tomb Raider" reboot, she shows no signs of slowing down in conquering Hollywood.

For the uninitiated, the star won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "The Danish Girl" and has enjoyed a lot of praises for exquisitely playing the role of Ava in "Ex-Machina."

Vikander's casting also puts an end to talks about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" star Daisy Ridley taking on the role of the beloved swashbuckler slash archaeologist.

Not too long ago, Ridley admitted that there were talks about the possibility but emphasized that nothing was set in stone at that time. As it turns out, it was Vikander who ultimately snagged the gig.

"Tomb Raider" is actually a game developed and released in 1996 by Eidos, which is now part of prominent game studio Square Enix.

The popular franchise inspired two films starring Jolie – "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" in 2001 and "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" two years later. The movies grossed $432 million worldwide.

The "Tomb Raider" reboot starring Vikander is expected to focus on the early days of Lara Croft before she went on to become the terrific buccaneer she was destined to be.

In the film, Lara Croft will be portrayed as an inexperienced explorer trying to find her way out of her first-ever adventure in one piece.

The "Tomb Raider" reboot with Vikander is slated for release next year. More details about the film should surface as production nears.
