'The Winds of Winter' release update: Further delay expected due to George R.R. Martin's new TV projects

George R.R. Martin's hands are currently full with TV projects, leading many to suspect that a 2017 release for "The Winds of Winter" is unlikely.

"The Winds of Winter," the latest installment in Martin's famed series, is one of the most anticipated books worldwide since J.K. Rowling wrapped up her famed "Harry Potter" novels. However, it looks like the 68-year-old author will need more time for his book because of the several TV projects he has lined up.

Syfy has announced that Martin will be working on a new program titled "Nightflyers" for HBO. In addition to the upcoming sci-fi series, he has also been tapped to develop various spin-offs for "Game of Thrones." Aside from writing digests of associated stories for "A Song of Ice and Fire," Martin is currently busy with other publishing projects. He also writes blogs during his free time. Although the novelist did not explicitly say his book will be further delayed, many fans believe his new writing gigs will be his main priority at the moment.

Since the 2011 release of "A Dance with Dragons," there has not been much information about "The Winds of Winter." Martin previously said he felt offended by fans who think he might die before the book was finished. In 2015, he mentioned that finishing the novel later that year was "very doable."

The bestselling author said in 2016 that the latest "Game of Thrones" season would contain parts of his unpublished book. Finally, in January 2017, Martin responded to a fan's comment on his blog and stated that he thought "The Winds of Winter" might be out this year. He also acknowledged that he pretty much said the same thing in 2016.

Whether or not Martin will be able to publish "The Winds of Winter" this year remains to be seen, but fans will surely continue to hold out hope. While waiting for another update from Martin, fans can tune in to "Game of Thrones" season 7, which premieres July 16 on HBO.
