The Garvey family will return for the third and final season of HBO's fantasy drama thriller "The Leftovers."

The show's renewal was announced by HBO president Michael Lombardo a few days after the second season finale was aired on Dec. 6. Lombardo also said that "The Leftovers" season 3 will be the last for the series.

"It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind 'The Leftovers' for its third and final season," Lombardo said. "This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon's artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season."

Lindelof, the show's creator, also talked about their plans for the show in a recent interview with Variety, saying that they already realized that the series was using the same story treatment since season 1. After they were done with the second season, the creative team realized that they need to bring the story of the series to "a definitive end."

In an interview with Slash Film, the series creator revealed that they want to develop the third and final season that would lead to an epic ending. Since the finale of the first two seasons have the same design, they will do an entirely different approach for the last season.

"The Garveys felt like they could pick up and go to this place the Departure didn't happen, but lo and behold, the same exact thing happened," Lindelof explained. "The only safe place is the place you're surrounded by the people you love. We can't do that again, and not just because the audience is expecting it, but because we were telling a story about geography in season two, while season three is going to be something else entirely."

There has been no news about the air date of "The Leftovers" season 3.
