Freddie Highmore's Shaun Murphy is getting a new rival on "The Good Doctor," which could have some huge implications to the power dynamics in the hospital moving forward.
According to reports, Fiona Gubelmann, known for her roles on FX's "Wilfred" and VH1's "Daytime Divas," has just signed on to appear in ABC's breakout medical drama in a recurring role. She will portray a "charming, funny new resident" named Morgan, who the publication describes to be "fully embracing life and yet also quite cutthroat," although not personal. For now, Gubelmann's arc as Morgan is meant to last for only five episodes, but there is a good chance she could be promoted into a series regular next season depending on how things go and the showrunners' own creative desires.
The character joins the talented surgical team of San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital including Shaun, Claire (Antonia Thomas), and Jared (Chuku Modu). It remains to be seen how exactly her arrival would affect the team, but she will likely give the doctors a healthy competition, especially Highmore's brilliant character seeing how he has always been the star. Per other reports, Gubelmann will debut in an upcoming episode titled "She."
"The Good Doctor," produced by SonyTV and ABC Studios based on a South Korean drama of the same name, became a surprise hit for the network as it quickly became the top new drama series of the season. The second season has not been officially ordered yet, but its impressive ratings and positive reviews make it a slamdunk for renewal. Just a few more weeks of healthy viewership and it should bump up to lock status.
