Bethesda, the developer and publisher of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR," announced that the open-world virtual reality (VR) game is scheduled to launch for the personal computer (PC) on April 3.
Ars Technica reported that Bethesda will be launching the once PlayStation VR (PSVR)-limited "Skyrim VR" for SteamVR on Microsoft Windows.The website reported that the Steam VR version will support the following headsets — HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality. Ars Technica reported that the upcoming SteamVR version is one fans should look out for, especially if they are sporting HTC Vive headsets as everything that fans disliked in the PSVR version will be rectified by HTC Vive control suite. Moreover, the website pointed out that the standard SteamVR's performance scale is higher than PSVR offers, ensuring a higher resolution and better textures for a better gaming experience.
Ars Technica also highlighted the fact that this is the first time Bethesda will support an Oculus Rift product, following the legal battle Oculus has with ZeniMax which owns Bethesda. While "Skyrim VR" will not be available for purchase in Oculus Store page, Oculus Rift headset owners may avail the game via SteamVR and boot it on Oculus hardware to be able to use the said headset alongside motion-tracked Oculus Touch controllers.
According to the SteamVR page of the game, "Skyrim VR" will re-explore the "Skyrim" world. Players will take on the role of the Dragonborn who is the prophesied hero supposedly born with the power of The Voice who can save the Empire of Tamriel. The Dragonborn is the only one capable of defeating and taming the returning dragons which was once thought to have been lost in the passages of the Elder Scrolls.
The SteamVR version of "Skyrim VR" will contain the three downloadable contents (DLC) alongside the main game — Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn. Unfortunately, Ars Technica reported that the upcoming version will not support will not launch with modification (mod) support.
The SteamVR version of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR" is now available for preorder at $59.99.
