James Spader reveals that his character Raymond "Red" Reddington understands why Liz Keen (Megan Boone) had to betray him last season to begin a new life in "The Blacklist" season 4.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Spader revealed that Red will continue to wait until Liz decides to trust him again.

"He's not insensitive to the fact of what she's going through in her life right now and he's aware of her knowledge of his feelings about all of it, and he's made that plain," the actor said. "I think he would have an understanding for what led to this."

Red and Liz's relationship had been the core of the plot during the first three seasons of the crime drama series, and it seems to stay that way in the upcoming season. However, Liz will also deal with the repercussions of her fake death, especially with her relationship to husband, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold).

Toward the end of season 3, Liz and Tom were briefly reunited with their daughter, Agnes, before Liz was captured by a man named Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen). But it seems like it may still take a while before the small family could finally have happier days.

According to reports, Tom will have to deal with his own adventures in the upcoming spin-off series called "The Blacklist: Redemption" together with Susan Hargrave (Famke Janssen).

Executive producers John Eisendrath and Jon Bokenkamp talked about the implication of Tom's fate on their family in season 4 in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"Moving forward, and now that they have a child together, we take very seriously that there's a family there. We hope that whatever the outcome, spin-off or no spin-off, that we will be able to tell stories where they are struggling in a way that the audience can relate to with obligations of parenting and desires to find out truths about themselves that might pull them apart from each other," Eisendrath said. "The show is about turns, and surprises, and identity, and secrets. We intend to have a lot of fun with the complexity of the situation that they are confronted with," Bokenkamp added.

"The Blacklist" season 4 is scheduled to return to NBC sometime this fall.
