Surface Pro 3 vs iPad Air 2 specs comparison: Microsoft's hybrid seems to be winning the business crowd

Now that Apple has revealed the iPad Air 2 during its October press briefing, fans of tablet computers are excited to get a hold of the latest technology from the Cupertino-based company.

The new iPad Air 2 comes at the height of the dwindling sales of Apple's tablet products. It has been given new features that are already present in other latest Apple devices, such as the TouchID fingerprint sensor and high-definition display.

But does it fare better than the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 when it comes to the business market?  Take a look first at the comparison between the specs of the two tablet products.

Display Size and Resolution

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is a 12-inch slate with a 2160 x 1440 pixel screen resolution, boasting a 216 ppi pixel density. The iPad Air 2, on the other hand, has a 9.7-inch touch screen display that packs in a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels.  It has a higher pixel density compared to the Surface Pro 3 at 264 ppi.

Under the hood

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 runs with the use of an Intel Core i3 processor with 4 GB of RAM, making it an ideal device for basic computing functions needed for office works. For bigger task usage, there is an option to buy the Surface Pro 3 with Core i5 and i7 models. Meanwhile, the iPad Air 2 has the latest A8X chip released by Apple, which are also present in the latest line of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus products.

With these features alone, tablet users can see that the Surface Pro 3 could be more useful for business owners who want to use a portable device to perform all their tasks.

Here are several other reasons why Microsoft's flagship tablet/laptop device is better compared to Apple's latest tablet release:

Surface Pen

Tasks can be done a lot easier with the help of the Surface Pen. This tablet accessory, which is not present in the iPad Air 2, can help users drag and select items or write and draw on the glass screen. It also serves as an alternative for the computer mouse for faster right- and left-click actions.

Flexible storage functions

Though the iPad Air 2 has huge built-in storage capacities, it is only confined to the 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB memory models. Meanwhile, the storage capacity of the Surface Pro 3 models can be expanded with the help of microSD cards, and it also has a full-size USB 3.0 port, handy for plugging in external storage devices.

With these reasons in mind, it seems like the Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft is a much better choice for business use compared to the iPad Air 2.
