Speculations are rife about the coming of the Microsoft Surface Phone. Considering that the Redmond-based giant already released a laptop under its brand, it was only a matter of time before the company ventured into the smartphone business in the form of the Microsoft Surface Phone.

Unlike the Lumia phones, the said handset will be completely developed by the software giant. Previously, there was no form of corroboration of the existence of the device. This changed after Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela spoke about it.

In the latest Windows Weekly podcast, Capossela confirmed that the Microsoft Surface Phone is indeed in the works, even going so far as to describing the offering a "breakthrough" phone.

He even remarked that the smartphone can be considered the "spiritual equivalent" of the Microsoft Surface Pro, the company's hit 2-in-1 hybrid tablet. With the tech firm's ambitious plans, however, Capossela admitted the development will take a while.

This is because Microsoft wants to make sure that they will be able to put together a phone that can compete with the biggest players around. "I think we have to do more breakthrough work to make Apple fans pause before they buy their 17th iPhone," he stated.

"To do something that I really think would compete, we need time to actually go build that," he added. That being said, it looks like the Microsoft Surface Phone will not be here soon.

But the best news is that it will actually get here and will be in the flesh in the future. When it does, it should be a stellar, top-tier smartphone considering the goals the company set for their next biggest mobile outing.

Capossela did not hint at a possible release date. Interestingly, some reports still claim that the smartphone will be out and about in the second half of 2016 with an Intel processor humming under its hood.
