Castiel (Misha Collins) may be close to Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), but the angel will also have another close connection with another Winchester family member in "Supernatural" season 12.

Showrunner Andrew Dabb told TVLine in an interview that the goal for the next season of the long-running supernatural drama series was to offer several stories that will paint a deeper picture of Castiel. This means that viewers of the show will find out more about his relationship with the Winchester brothers as well as a few details about his background.

The fans of the series will also see the connection between him and Sam and Dean's mother Mary (Samantha Smith). But it does not mean that they will be linked romantically. They will just find themselves with a lot in common.

The showrunner also revealed that Castiel will deal with the repercussions of the events that happened in season 11. "He feels responsible for Lucifer getting out of the cage, although as we'll learn, pretty much everyone else on our show feels responsible for that, too. Obviously, as threats to Sam and Dean come up, he will be there to stand by our boys' side," Dabb stated.

Meanwhile, Collins revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Castiel and Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard) will have an unlikely pairing when the series returns next season. According to the report, Crowley would want to get rid of Lucifer (Rick Springfield) in order to reclaim his throne in hell, while Castiel wants Lucifer to be eradicated ultimately. This means that the angel and the demon will have to work hand in hand for the same goal.

On the other hand, Dabb told EW in a separate interview that the story of Chuck (Rob Benedict) and Amara (Emily Swallow) will not be a central focus of the story this season. "I wouldn't say conclusively that their story is over, but I would say that their story is happening off-screen," the showrunner stated.

The CW will air the premiere episode of "Supernatural" season 12 on Thursday, Oct. 13.
