'Supergirl' season 2 spoilers: Superman to finally arrive; Who will play the role?

Superman will finally show his face in "Supergirl" season 2. CBS

When "Supergirl" flies to The CW, his mega-popular cousin will take to the air with her. It has been confirmed that Superman will indeed be in season 2 of the superhero drama.

"Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement picked up by E! Online.

It was a rather surprising move seeing that there is the lingering issue with the way DC Comics characters are represented in the live-action universe, with the television side completely separate from the movie side.

Such was the case in "Arrow," which was forced to forgo its Suicide Squad storyline following the announcement of a movie based on the group of villains.

Fans know that at some point "Supergirl" will have to acknowledge Superman. When the series was in CBS, the man of steel was frequently mentioned and will sometimes appear, but in ways he was obscured. The show was prohibited not to give the hero a face.

At most, the show established that Superman is indeed out there and while it has been doing its best not to leave him out, "Supergirl" season 2 will take things to the next level by actually hiring an actor to play the iconic superhero.

The excitement now shifts to who will get the honor and be the face of the character in "Supergirl" season 2. There have been media outlets suggesting one actor— Tom Welling.

The star has already played the role in "Smallville" for a whole decade (2001 to 2010). The show aired on The WB, which went on to become The CW after merging with UPN. That being said, the network can easily turn to it.

However, Inverse notes that since the show is casting, it is more likely that a fresh face will be tapped to portray the character. Who will end up donning the cape in "Supergirl" season 2 will be revealed in the months to come.
