Netflix has yet to announce "Stranger Things" season 3, but a major TV actress might have already confirmed its renewal unofficially. The celebrity in question is none other than Amy Brenneman who is best known as Laurie Garvey in the HBO series "The Leftovers."
Over the weekend, Brenneman shared a photo of herself with Matthew Modine who plays evil scientist Dr. Martin Brenner in "Stranger Things," and her caption may be hinting at her involvement in the potential third installment of the hit Netflix show.
"Many years ago I played Matthew Modine's wife," Amy Brenneman tweeted on Sunday. "I am lucky enough to be doing it again. Beautiful man, and my kids think I'm a badass because of @Stranger_Things."
Brenneman and Modine previously worked together in the 1995 film "Bye Bye Love" where they portrayed the divorced couple Susan and Dave Goldman, respectively. So, the photo could mean nothing but two former co-stars reuniting.
However, Refinery29 says Modine looks very much like his "Stranger Things" character in the picture. That combined with the tagging of the show's official Twitter page has the publication speculating that she might play Modine's onscreen wife in the Duffer brothers-helmed series this time around.
Modine's character, Brenner, was the primary villain in the first season alongside the Demogorgon. He was seemingly killed by the creature during its showdown with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) in the season finale. However, it was previously confirmed that El's Papa is very much alive out there somewhere.
While he did not play a big role in the sophomore run, the reveal sounds like the notorious scientist is going to return to the series for a major arc soon. This may be where Brenneman enters the picture. Netflix could give him a storyline, perhaps a backstory, which would introduce his wife.
Then again, this is just a speculation. Netflix has yet to formally renew the show, so it is best to take this with a healthy grain of salt. The Duffer brothers did let it slip though that "Stranger Things" is happening.
Ross Duffer recently told Deadline that they are in the very early days of the third installment, a statement that was backpedaled after.
"I probably wasn't supposed to say that," he said. That's not official, that wasn't an official announcement — we're just working on it, just for our own amusement...for fun!"
If renewed, the show should be back by late 2018 or early 2019.
