Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parentage has been the subject of rumors and debates ever since she debuted in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." While the mystery behind her origin will likely be answered in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," a new claim swirling around posits it may have already been revealed as part of the story campaign of "Star Wars: Battlefront II."
According to reports, the game centers on Imperial commando Iden Versio, who leads a team called Inferno Squad that does all the dirty work in the name of the Emperor following his death in the hands of Darth Vader. She later defects to the Rebellion and starts a relationship with her squadmate/lover Del Meeko in Jakku. Beyond goodness, it turns out the basic reason for their betrayal is that they have a child.
Three decades later, Kylo Ren, who searches for the map to Luke Skywalker's location, finds Del and interrogates him. Before he is ordered to death, the First Order Jedi reveals that their child is, in fact, a girl.
"She ruined you," he says about Iden. "You think she changed you, but she made you a traitor. She made you weak. You think your daughter changed you..." This revelation is never addressed or explained further, but fans speculate Del and Iden's daughter could be Rey.
While pretty much everyone has been suspected of being the Force-sensitive scavenger's parents since it was revealed that the character does not know who they are, this theory does at least have some plausibility. Rey grew up on the same planet where the "Battlefront II" couple fell in love, after all. It also explains Rey's piloting and repairing abilities. Inverse notes that Iden is one of the most capable pilots in the "Star Wars" Universe, while Del is Inferno Squad's engineer and technical expert.
The catch though is that there seems to be no reason for Iden to leave Rey on the planet since her fate was left in the air until the end of the game. It also seems unlikely for Lucasfilm to give away the answer to the saga's biggest mystery easily.
Whatever the case is, Del and Iden's daughter will hopefully be addressed in the first downloadable content of "Battlefront II" coming on Dec. 13. If not, fans will have to wait two days until the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" premiere. Directed by Rian Johnson, Episode VIII will open in cinemas on Dec. 15.
