Filming for "Star Wars Episode 8" has officially begun. New details on who will be appearing in the sequel have also come to light, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect in the highly anticipated film.
The follow-up to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was supposed to start filming last month, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed during the company's latest quarterly earnings call. But since the movie will no longer be releasing May next year, as it was initially scheduled, production was pushed back.
With the start of the production for "Star Wars Episode 8," several actors have cancelled their scheduled appearances in the upcoming Pensacon in Florida, including Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca; and Tim Rose, who plays Admiral Ackbar. Mike Quinn, who plays Nien Nunb, is also cancelling his Pensacon visit to return behind the steering wheel of his character's X-wing, Starfighter.
The biggest cast news to emerge, however, involves Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Luke Skywalker's master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. There's word going around that the original character will appear as a force ghost in the film.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is rumored to show up as a guide to scavenger-turned-warrior Rey as she gets a grasp of the force. However, it is important to note that McGregor's participation in "Star Wars Episode 8" is still unconfirmed.
Meanwhile, guaranteed to return in the upcoming film is John Boyega (Finn). The actor has been updating fans on social media about what he's up to "Star Wars"-wise and has hinted that he is doing more lightsaber training. And it appears that he will be better in using the weapon as well.
His outfit in an Instagram photo where he posed with his sister was reportedly captured as he took a break from the training.
"Star Wars Episode 8" hits the big screen on Dec. 17, 2017.
