'Splatoon 2' release date: Producer hints at game's possible sequel

It looks a "Splatoon" sequel is on the way, if the words of the game's producer Hisashi Nogami are any indication. During an interview with UK-based game magazine Game Master, Nogami teased the possibility of a follow-up to the mega-successful ink-tastic shooter.

"We want to raise this new IP with care, so maybe we'll get a chance to make it happen if players support us," the producer said (via Nintendo Everything). Fan support won't be a stretch, considering how successful the game was.

Nintendo sold 4.06 million copies of "Splatoon." According to Wii U Daily, that means that one-third of Wii U owners purchased the game. The title was the fifth fastest-selling title in the UK, as per Eurogamer. Several media outlets even hailed the shooter as the best game of 2015.

That being said, "Splatoon 2" is all but confirmed. But as Nogami said, they want to make sure the sequel will be up to par with the original. Taking into account Nintendo's affinity to take time in putting out sequels, fans are still years away from the follow-up.

Wii U Daily says that "Splatoon 2" might not be out until 2020. With four years in front of fans, it's a good thing support for "Splatoon" is not entirely over. A Splatfest to be presented by "Pokemon" is scheduled to take place on Feb. 19.

Players in North America will be divided into two based on which they prefer between "Pokemon Blue" and "Pokemon Red." Those in Japan will choose between "Pokemon Green" and "Pokemon Red." The event will be held simultaneously around the world.

Meanwhile, Nogami also teased that although the updates for "Splatoon" already ended last month, "it's possible we might be able to do something more in the future. Just please give us some time."

"Splatoon" was released in May 2015 and has enjoyed rave reviews from fans and gaming websites.
