'Spider-Man 2' cast rumors: New audition tape further hints at Gwen Stacy

It has been rumored that Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's love interest after Mary Jane Watson in the comics, is appearing in the upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel. Now, a second piece of evidence has surfaced, fueling the claim that the character is indeed about to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

A new audition tape has recently surfaced featuring an unknown actress acting out scenes with Peter Parker and Gwen's father, George Stacy.

This is the second Gwen Stacy audition to leak online. Both actresses involved in the videos appear to be newcomers, suggesting Marvel may have launched an open casting call for the role. If this is the case, Marvel's version of Gwen Stacy may be a far cry from what fans became familiar with in the past "Spider-Man films.

As previously reported, the first actress, Iris Haller, is French, similar to Gwen's mother in the comics. The popular theory is that Gwen's parents in the MCU may have divorced and she could be originally from Europe but moved to the United States to live with his father.

To recap, Gwen Stacy debuted on the big screen in "Spider-Man 3." Played by Bryce Dallas Howard, she was introduced as one of Peter's (Tobey MaGuire) classmates at university whom he went on a date with after breaking up with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). In Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man," the character played a prominent role, this time portrayed by Emma Stone. However, like her comic book counterpart, she tragically died at the hands of Green Goblin in the sequel, only this time it was Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) and not his father, Norman.

It remains to be seen what her story arc would be in Marvel's "Spider-Man 2." Marvel has not addressed the leaked auditions yet, so it is best to take the aforementioned with a grain of salt. If anything, though, MCU's Gwen will likely be the same as her comic book counterpar,t which becomes romantically involved with Peter. Only time will tell.

Starring Tom Holland as the web-slinging superhero, the untitled "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel is set to arrive in theaters on July 5, 2018.
