Sony reportedly working on upgraded PS4

The PS4 is allegedly getting an upgrade. Sony/PlayStation

Sony is working on an enhanced version of the PlayStation 4, as per a new rumor. Kotaku was told by developers during the Game Developers Conference of the new version of the gaming console dubbed the PlayStation 4.5.

The console will allegedly boast superior graphical power that will allow it to run games in stellar 4K resolution, thanks to its improved processing power and a mega-powerful GPU.

Currently, the PS4 supports 1080p resolution in games. This pixel size is the standard for gaming consoles today. The 4K resolution upgrade in the PS4.5 multiplies that frontier by four.

That being said, titles will look their best and most detailed when played in this new and improved PlayStation console.

It is important to note that the current PS4 console can already churn out photos and videos with the same 4K resolution, although it is incapable of processing the same pixel size with games themselves.

Developers have already been approached by Sony about the PlayStation 4.5, although it was hinted by one of them that it won't be seen in the flesh until next year.

One developer that spoke to Kotaku says that the PS4.5 is nothing but "exploratory" at the moment and might not see the light of day anytime soon.

As of this writing, the aforementioned hardware upgrades are the only details that prove the existence of the PlayStation 4.5. There's no information on its release date or pricing.

It can be remembered that Sony markedly lowered the price of the PS4 from $400 to $350, which is believed to be the company's means to prepare for the machine's launch.

Sadly, upon this exciting PS4.5 revelation, more questions arise than answers. It remains to be seen whether or not the console will only support games especially made for it or how exactly it functions.

Sony is currently reportedly hard at work on the PS4.5, which means that more details may crop up soon. So far, the game giant has only talked about the console behind closed doors.
