'Scandal' season 5 spoilers: Olivia's straightforward comment shocks Mellie in episode 11

Mellie Grant and Olivia Pope in Scandal season 5. ABC

Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) will get the shock of her life after hearing Olivia Pope's (Kerry Washington) comments on her work in the next episode of "Scandal" season 5.

In episode 11 titled "The Candidate," the former wife and former mistress of President Fitz Grant (Tony Goldwyn) will work together to help Mellie in her Presidential campaign.

The trailer for the episode shows Olivia reading Mellie's manuscript before giving her comments. When the former White House Communications Director is finally ready to give her feedback, she tells Mellie that she wants her to scrap the entire chapter two of the manuscript.

The former First Lady contests Olivia's suggestion, saying that chapter two is very important since it contains the part when Fitz was shot. But Olivia did not bulge, saying that the nation is not interested to hear that.

"What they do care about is you, pulling back the mask and finally offering a real glimpse about the deepest darkest corners of your soul," Olivia said. "That means you can cut chapter two and replace it with the chapter on why you stay."

Mellie is immediately taken aback with Olivia's advice because she knows what she is referring to. Olivia wants Mellie to talk about how she felt when she discovered that Olivia and her husband was having an affair behind her back.

"The chapter is what the American people want to read. It's what I want to read. It's all anyone wants to read," the fierce crisis manager tells Mellie. "Was it for ambition, or was it for love?"

Mellie could not answer any of Olivia's questions. But she reminds her that she asked her to help her with the campaign, and that is how she will help her.

But while Mellie and Olivia work together, Liz North (Portia De Rossi) will do everything that she can to convince Vice President Susan Ross (Artemis Pebdani) to run opposite Mellie in the U.S. Presidential election.

"Scandal" season 5 episode 11 airs on Thursday, Feb. 18, on ABC.
