Samsung Galaxy S9 specs rumors: Geekbench scores still lower than iPhone X; Launch on Feb. 25?

Apple's latest iPhones are currently on top of the hierarchy in terms of performance, thanks to the A11 Bionic chip that powers them, and this may still be the case even after Samsung Galaxy S9 launches next year. This is if the alleged Geekbench 4 results of the tech giant's 2018 flagship are to be believed.

The model SM-G960F recently appeared on the benchmarking website. This model number is widely assumed to be Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S9, considering Galaxy S8+ came with the model number SM-G955F. According to the listing, the new device will run Android 8, sport 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM) and be powered by a new octa-core Samsung Exynos chipset.

The Samsung phone earned a multi-core score of 7,787 on Geekbench 4 and a single-core score of 2,680. Those are impressive numbers, especially when compared with the device it would replace. The Samsung Galaxy S8 only had a single-core score of 1,856 and a multi-core score of 6,295.

Although the results still place the phone among the best Android smartphones on the market right now, those figures are not close to matching that of the new iPhones'. The iPhone X alone, which had the lowest numbers among the three due to its higher display resolution, had earned a 4,197 single-core score and a 10,051 multi-core score on the same test.

Then again, Geekbench's repository has a supposedly nasty habit of manipulating scores, so it is best to take these results with a grain of salt. The Samsung Galaxy S9 series is still in the prototype phase as well, and this could just be one of those models being tested at the moment. If it is, the company still has plenty of time to tweak the performance.

The next-generation Galaxy S device has no release date yet, but Forbes predicts it could follow its traditional timeline and get unveiled just before the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This year, Samsung had to push back the launch in April due to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco.

Assuming there will be no roadblocks ahead, it should go back to its original release schedule next year. With the MWC 2018 taking place on Feb. 26, the S9 may be unveiled on Feb. 25.
