Samsung Galaxy S10 release date, specs rumors: To feature in-display fingerprint scanner

Samsung's latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, were only unveiled a few months ago at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, but the reports are already in regarding the next-generation device. If the rumors are anything to go by, the Samsung Galaxy S10 will boast an in-display fingerprint sensor, a feature that was initially expected to be introduced by the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 this year.

According to the South Korean tech news outlet, The Bell, the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be launched in early 2019 with a bunch of flagship-killer features. One of these is the long-rumored in-display fingerprint scanner, although it can be recalled that such feature was promised to be included in the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

The phablet, which will be announced later this year, was believed to sport an optical biometric technology that makes the entire screen panel capable of reading fingerprint signatures.

However, there could have been a hiccup in the ongoing development of the in-display fingerprint reader component for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Per Forbes, the South Korean tech giant may need more time to complete the technology, and it is more likely that the feature will be ready by the time of the arrival of 2019 Samsung flagships. The first few devices to receive this feature are the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus, which are reported to sport 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch display, respetively.

The Bell has tipped that at least three tech manufacturers are working together to develop Samsung Galaxy S10's in-display fingerprint reader technology, the US-based companies, Qualcomm and Synaptics, and Aegis Tech from Taiwan. Interestingly, these companies are not only focused on an under-screen fingerprint scanner, as the Galaxy S10 could also feature a 3D camera sensing technology that resembles the Face ID system of Apple's iPhone X.

It should be noted that the Galaxy S10 moniker for Samsung's 2019 flagship device is not yet final, as the company may begin to adapt a new naming scheme for its smartphone lineup after the Galaxy S9. Some reports suggest that the Galaxy S9 successor will be called the Galaxy X instead, although the name was already reserved for Samsung's very first foldable handset.
