'Sabrina' plot news: Spin-off won't cross over with 'Riverdale' anytime soon

Netflix's "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" may technically be a spin-off of The CW's "Riverdale," but fans should not expect a crossover between the two shows anytime soon.

In the latest episode of Archie Digest: A Riverdale Podcast, co-host Chris Hayner revealed there are no plans to take that route just yet. The CW boss Mark Pedowitz apparently told him that their priority is to successfully launch "Sabrina" as its own entity, although it seems they are open to re-exploring the idea of a crossover down the line.

"Based on what [Pedowitz] said, they are completely focused on getting Sabrina off the ground on Netflix and not thinking about crossovers at all, but they hope there might be a possibility sometime in the future," Hayner explained. "But they want to establish Sabrina as its own entity on Netflix before they even start thinking about it."

"Sabrina" shares the same creative team as "Riverdale." It is directed by Lee Toland Krieger and written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with the series being co-produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The show was originally being developed at The CW but was moved to Netflix after the streaming service giant offered a longer deal.

Following the half-human, half-witch titular character wrestling with her dual nature while fighting the evil forces that threaten her and the human world, "Sabrina" has since earned a two-season, 20-episode order. Production is set to begin next month, with "Mad Men" alum Kiernan Shipka in the lead role.

Aguirre-Sacasa says the actress has been a frontrunner since they started shaping up the series. As he revealed to Entertainment Weekly, "her name was on everyone's wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we're incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own."

There is no word on the official release date yet, but "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2018.
