'Rick and Morty' VR game news: 'Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality' game officially arrives on April 20

Adult Swim's "Rick and Morty" branches out to the gaming scene with the show's upcoming virtual reality (VR) title, the "Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality."

First announced in July 2016, "Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality" is a VR game developed by Owlchemy Labs in partnership with Adult Swim. On Wednesday, the studio confirmed the game's release date: April 20. It will be available for the Oculus Rift via Oculus Home and HTC Vive via Steam for $29.99.

The upcoming game has toured various conventions in the past year, including the popular San Diego Comic-Con. It allows users to play as one of Rick's clones and go through the troubles that come with it. Using VR technology, players will have to finish puzzles and missions to reach a new level.

As the players progress through the game, they can explore new aspects of the TV show that have not aired yet. It is set in Rick's garage, which is filled with a lot of things to play with. Elements from the animated series are crammed in the area, including chemistry sets and random boxes.

In an interview with Polygon last summer, Owlchemy Labs' Alex Schwartz confirmed that "Rick and Morty" co-creator/voice actor Justin Roiland was also part of the game. He teased that fans of the Adult Swim program will enjoy Roiland's work in the VR game.

"We get like an hour long, uncut Justin Roiland brain dump, and we sit around in tears laughing at his VO," Schwartz shared. "It's one of the funnest things I've ever done, to hear how he explores the world and the situations we've built inside the game and just kind of goes deep on it. It's super fun."

Roiland himself is no stranger to the VR industry. Back in 2016, he collaborated with Epic Games executive producer Tanya Watson to launch Squanchtendo,  an independent VR game studio. He has also worked in other VR titles as a voice actor since then.

Earlier this month, Adult Swim surprised fans by releasing the premiere of "Rick and Morty" season 3. The new episode showed the Smith family coping without Rick.
