'Ray Donovan' season 4 premiere date: Ray's healing process begins albeit a little dark and 'wacky'

When "Ray Donovan" season 4 premieres today on Showtime, the titular character played by Tony Award-winning actor Liev Schreiber will try to fight his way out of a dark place where his seemingly insurmountable problems led him.

The third season of the series practically sent Ray on a downward spiral, but in an interview with Toronto Sun, "Ray Donovan" season 4 will be based on the premise of getting back on track.

"The idea that's appealing to Ray – and that I think we put forward – is that redemption is possible for anyone, that all they have to do is ask for forgiveness," the actor said.

By the end of "Ray Donovan" season 3, fans will remember that Ray went straight to a church to make a confession to a priest after watching his brother get injured and his father kill an old lady.

"I think this construct can exist outside the Catholic Church, but it's one that appeals to Ray and invites him back to the Church – which is where his problems started in the first place. In many ways, this is the event we dive into season 4 with," the "Ray Donovan" lead said.

In "Ray Donovan" season 4, Ray will be "in a mode of repairing himself," as the actor described to Moviefone.

The actor said that when the show returns for a brand new season, his character will be on his way "to healing, to getting better, to recovery" although there's no telling how long this process will last.

However, "Ray Donovan" season 4 still starts with his "mid-life crisis" that has to do with his father's murderous tendencies and what he described to Deadline as "survivor psychology."

Despite such premise, Schreiber would like to think that "Ray Donovan" season 4 will be "bigger, bolder [and] really wacky."

It's hard to imagine "Ray Donovan" season 4 to be wacky seeing what happened in season 3. However, it looks like the show is going for a lighter tone while still keeping its signature dark plots.

"Ray Donovan" season 4 premieres June 26 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
