Gamers would know that like games, consoles also need constant updates to ensure smooth gameplay. Thus, PlayStation 4 (PS4) players who have been waiting for such an update will be glad to know that the latest update for increased performance and stability, patch 5.05, has already been released, along with a free beta for another future update, patch 5.50.

Although the numbers seem the same, do not confuse the 5.05 update with the 5.50. The recently released patch 5.05 does some overall improvements, which is not really much at this point. It is actually required to be installed, but it should not take up too much space as it is only around 400 megabytes (MB). They have not really specified anything about the update as from the fact that it improves gameplay.

As for the newer patch 5.50, it has not been confirmed that this will be the next update to be released. At this point, they are still doing the betas, and Sony could still roll out some more updates before 5.50. However, gamers who want to try the 5.50 already can register for the beta by simply going to the PlayStation website.

All gamers have to do is just answer the questions. The registration closes when the beta starts although no news has been released yet as to when it will actually start. As for what 5.50 may add, it will obviously be a lot more than just performance updates. "We're getting ready for the next major system update for PS4 and can use some help from PS4 owners to test it out ahead of launch," writes Sony, as per The Sun.

This is not the first time Sony did this. The last time a big patch had a beta was its 5.0 update. It added most of the things gamers have now on their consoles. For the 5.50 beta, gamers who try out the beta can even show off as they will be given access to an exclusive PSN avatar.

Gamers already have a list of suggestions they have been wanting to be added. One of the many things is the option to change PSN usernames.
