'Persona 5' release date: Launch date revealed by hackers ahead of May 5 announcement?

Atlus seems to be counting down to something special. Atlus

Atlus will make a major announcement regarding "Persona 5" on May 5, as indicated in the countdown timer on the website that trickles away the seconds to the said date. It is expected that when the countdown ends, the release date of the title will be revealed.

However, before the Japanese game studio could make the announcement, hackers reportedly broke into the official news channel of the game by figuring out the password for the website (they even advised Atlus to think their passwords through) to reveal that the game will be released on July 8.

Persona Central, however, is adamant that the post, which was even dated May 5, 2016, was only a hoax and was made to look like Atlus itself leaked it.

The date allegedly covers the simultaneous launch of the PC and the PS4 version. There was no mention of the PS3, which made some gamers a bit incredulous of the so-called hacking.

"Persona 5" was announced to come only to the PS4 and the PS3. A PC version hasn't been mentioned until now, but it is something that a lot of fans are definitely on board for.

But the PS3 being left out in the post had many thinking that the PS3 version was scrapped. Whether or not Atlus is ditching the PS3 edition for a PC version, fans will know on May 5.

The release date of "Persona 5" has always been a mystery, with Atlus only teasing a summer launch and shying away from providing more specific information. Fans will remember that the game was originally slated to hit the shelves last year, but was ultimately delayed to 2016 so Atlus can further polish the game.

"Persona 5" follows a group of high school students who can call upon their Personas, who help them in battle. Not too long ago, the game was rumored to be the first in the franchise to get DLCs.

Whatever the game has in store, fans should get a glimpse of it all on May 5.
