After months of speculation, CBS has confirmed that the highly popular sci-fi TV series will end after season 5.

The news about the cancellation of the series came along with the announcement of the premiere date for the upcoming season.

Executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Greg Plageman released a statement to IGN regarding the conclusion of the critically acclaimed sci-fi crime drama.

"We're extremely excited to be able share this final season with the fans. We're eternally grateful to our amazing cast and crew, as well as our partners at the studio and network," the executive producers said.

They also dedicated the last installment of the series to their fans, who even voted to make the show the Favorite TV Crime Drama at this year's People's Choice Awards.

"As life has come to imitate 'Person of Interest,' it's been our great privilege to work on show for the past five seasons. We can't wait for you to experience this thrilling and final chapter," Nolan and Plageman added.

"Person of Interest" season 5 will premiere on May 3, with the episode titled "B.S.O.D." Then beginning Monday, May 9, the network will air two episodes per week. The episode titled "SNAFU" will air on that Monday, while episode 3, titled "Truth Be Told," airs Tuesday, May 10.

While the network already confirmed the series cancellation, fans still continue to do their best to save the show. The online petition on Change.org remains, and an ongoing campaign to encourage Netflix to pick up the show after season 5 was launched as soon as the cancellation announcement was dropped.

According to the petition page to save the show, "With CBS canceling the show it gives another network a chance to finally pick it up. We're hoping that Netflix will pick it up."
