'Penny Dreadful' season 2 spoilers: Vanessa uses her personal strength to defeat a strong force in finale episode

Eva Green as Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful.

The penultimate episode of "Penny Dreadful" season 2 was aired Sunday, and it left Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) with a big challenge for the season finale.

In the season 2 finale titled "And They Were Enemies," Vanessa will have to rely on her beliefs to be able to get out of her bloody encounter which also involves Ethan (Josh Hartnett) and Roper (Stephen Lord). Will there be more bloodshed at the hands of Lily (Billie Piper) at the end of the season?

In episode 9, Lily was seen forming a monster squad to spread doom around the world. If they survive the approaching bloodbath, the evil forces will probably hunt down the lead characters of "Penny Dreadful" in season 3.

The episode also showed the unlikely pairing between Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily, since both enjoy brutal, bloody encounters. Lily likes to hurt her partners, while Dorian does not care if he gets hurt because nothing can ever hurt him.

Spoilers for episode 10 claim that Vanessa will have to save Ethan from the impending danger because of his real identity. Ethan has been hiding it for the longest time, but this revelation could cost him his life.

Vanessa already saved him from Roper's hands when she stabbed the Pinkerton agent to death with the same knife that he used to stab Ethan. However, the "Penny Dreadfu"l heroine was not proud of what she did, and she felt bad for killing a man even if she already gave an unforgivable curse to someone in the past.

"Penny Dreadful" is a British-American horror drama which features a mix of characters from different 19th century British and Irish fiction, including Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray," "Dracula" written by Bram Stoker, as well as Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein."

The season 2 finale of "Penny Dreadful" will air on Sunday, July 5, on Showtime.
