'Outlander' season 4 spoilers: Is Tobias Menzies still coming back?

Tobias Menzies as Frank Randall in "Outlander" season 3. Starz

Frank Randall's death in "Outlander" season 3 seemingly marked the end of the road for actor Tobias Menzies. However, some can't help but wonder if that was really the last of him. To ease everyone's minds, executive producer Ronald D. Moore is shedding light on the actor's potential involvement in season 4.

In an interview with Deadline about the upcoming season, the showrunner revealed Menzies could actually be coming back in some capacity.

"I think there's a strong possibility we're going to do that," he said of bringing back the 2015 Golden Globes Best Supporting Actor nominee. Apparently, there have been discussions about Menzies' possible return next season, although he did not specify whether it would be as Frank or Jonathan. Either way, he said they are considering "flashbacks, or some other kinds of sequences" to make that happen.

Tobias has portrayed two characters on the show: Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, a sadistic soldier from the 18th century who served as the main antagonist for two whole seasons, and Frank Randall, a descendant of the former and Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) husband in the 20th century. Both characters have met their tragic fates this season, with the cruel one dying during the Battle of Culloden and the modern one in a car accident 200 years later.

The "Outlander" team has long revealed that they are open to the possibility of Menzies' return. Fellow showrunner Maril Davis previously revealed they were actually tempted to keep one of his characters alive.

"It's hard to lose him. He's such an integral part of the show and he's done such an amazing job," she explained. "We're such fans of Tobias just in real life, and it's hard losing a character you've grown to love and is so much fun to write for."

At this point, Menzies' return is a mere possibility. As Moore said, it is on the table, but nothing has been set in stone yet; and even if he does not return, the actor's fans do not need to worry. Menzies has a few projects coming to fill the "Outlander" void.

He is appearing in the English independent film "Carmilla," which started shooting this past September, as well as the Anthony Hopkins-starring TV movie "King Lear." The actor is also slated to star in AMC's upcoming anthology series "The Terror," which will air spring next year.

"Outlander 4" has no release date yet, but it is expected to come around 2018. Check out its first teaser below.
