'Outlander' season 4 spoilers: Cast hints at Brianna's time travel companion

"Outlander" season 4 is featuring another time travel adventure but this time, it will not be Claire (Caitriona Balfe).

Previous set photos revealed it will be Brianna (Sophie Skelton) as she was spotted filming in a Scottish outfit with Steven Cree, who plays Ian Murray. It looks like she will not be alone, though. Latest spoilers suggest one more character walking through the stones of Craigh Na Dun this year: Roger (Richard Rankin).

Rankin recently shared on his Twitter account that he went horse riding with co-actor John Bell, aka Young Ian. The activity is nothing new on the show especially for 18th-century characters like Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire. The intriguing part, however, is that Rankin's character lives in the 20th century. He owns a car and does not need a horse if there is somewhere he needs to be, suggesting he may be traveling somewhere that has no vehicles next season.

Could it be the 18th century Scotland?

While Rankin and Bell's horse riding could have happened outside filming; in "Drums of Autumn," International Business Times notes that his character indeed jumps back in time with Brianna. The latter meets his biological father for the first time and Roger gets to meet the Frasers as well. If anything, Rankins' horse riding session with Bell could mean young Ian will be among those who will be introduced to the modern man.

It is a possibility but as to how they meet and when remain unclear. The last time fans have seen young Ian, he was aboard the same ship as Jamie and Claire until a sudden storm separated him from the couple. While Jamie and Claire later landed on the shores of Georgia, young Ian's whereabouts have been left in the air. Fans will have to wait for now to find out.

"Outlander" season 4 is currently in production. This week, the cast and crew will take over the streets of Glasgow city center after filming at George Square, the University of Glasgow and Pollok Country Park.

The show has no return date yet, but it is expected to be back on Starz for its fourth season this fall.
