OnePlus X2 release date, rumors: Company debunks speculations of an X upgrade coming this year

The OnePlus X is one of the first smartphones ever released by the handset maker OnePlus, and many tech enthusiasts were thrilled upon hearing the reports that the next-gen device is coming soon. Unfortunately, the public should not get their hopes up too easily as the company itself confirmed that there are no such plans to launch a OnePlus X2.

Back in 2015, OnePlus launched the first in the company's lineup of affordable Android phones, but with impressive hardware specs. The OnePlus X was positively received by many smartphone users, and it almost appeared that the company would release a follow-up device soon. After two years, reports about the so-called OnePlus X2 have resurfaced, suggesting that the said smartphone will be available as early as 2018. OnePlus CEO Carl Pei happened to read the latest report, and quickly debunked the news that the OnePlus X2 is coming, Tech Radar reported.

The online publication reported that back in June 2016 the OnePlus exec already downplayed the rumors that the OnePlus X successor would be released someday. In fact, the company might not have any plans to continue the X lineup up to now. Reports about the OnePlus X2 release came from an anonymous tipster, stating that OnePlus has an upcoming project that is another budget-friendly smartphone. In spite of its low-range price, the rumored OnePlus X2 has a lineup of high-end features that can only be found in premium handsets.

The OnePlus X2 is rumored to sport a 5.5-inch full view display and boast a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. The handset in question is expected to receive 4 GB of random-access memory (RAM) and up to 64 GB built-in storage option. Interestingly, the OnePlus X2 is claimed to have the OnePlus 5T's Face Unlock technology included in its 16 MP front-facing camera. The OnePlus X successor is also said to pack with 3,000 mAh.

What makes the OnePlus X2 rumor questionable is the claim that the smartphone will only cost around $250, given that the handset has a high-end Snapdragon 835 chipset, face recognition feature, and a possible dual rear camera lens.
